Is CBD oil and coffee an effective combination?

Coffee is one of the most loved and consumed beverages ever. Just recently, a survey that was conducted of 3,000 people, a whopping 64% confessed they had had a cup of coffee only within the last day.

CBD doesn’t come close to coffee when comparing the longevity of the two substances. However, CBD is starting to enjoy some meteoric rise in form and popularity that few products in the world can compare with. For the most part, this is as a result of the many therapeutic properties that it is known to contain.

Several people love coffee because of its ability to keep them energized and sharp for long periods. However, people have come to realize these benefits of drinking coffee come with the jitters. It is for this reason that many coffee drinkers have resorted to dosing their cups of coffee with a bit of CBD oil. The rationale behind this is to get the therapeutic properties of CBD to balance out the effects of the caffeine. For many users, the potential of experiencing a spike in focus and concentration whiles avoiding the jitters.

It is for this reason that CBD–infused coffee can be seen popping up everywhere you go. However, with many businesses already on the bandwagon, doing their possible best to fuel the boost in demand for CBD-infused coffee, the question remains, ‘How effective is CBD when used together with coffee?’

Are the substances a perfect match, or merely a short-lived fad stirred by marketing hype?

The effects of coffee

Often spoken of in the same bracket as cognitive enhancers, the beverage, coffee is one that can boost a person’s focus, get rid of drowsiness, and improve a person’s short-term memory. For many coffee lovers, taking coffee during the early hours of the morning is something they wouldn’t trade for anything in the world.  The problem – and a big one at that – is that when taken in excess, the stimulation coffee provides can result in the jitters.

This is where the consumer begins to feel uneasy, shaky, experiences sweaty palms, and other anxiety-like symptoms. Coffee’s stimulating effects to a large extent, come from the way it acts on adenosine receptors. Caffeine is an adenosine receptor antagonist meaning it impedes adenosine (a neuromodulator in the central nervous system) from binding to its (adenosine) receptors to keep you alert and awake. Should adenosine activate its receptors (A1, A2a, A2b, and A3), the neural activity will slow down so that you begin to feel sleepy.

The effects of CBD oil

The potential benefits of CBD on the user are vast, because it contains analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-emetic, and anti-oxidant properties, to mention a few. CBD though very popular because of its pain-relieving features, is also well-renowned for its calming and relaxing effects as well as its ability to improve sleep. Known to supplement the body’s endocannabinoid system, the results of CBD can in-part be attributed to its inhibition of adenosine reuptake. CBD, when consumed delays the reuptake of adenosine, which leads to a boost of adenosine levels within the brain.

Overlapping actions of caffeine and CBD oil

Now that we know that caffeine and cannabinoids like CBD in hemp oil can both act on adenosine receptors, the next important thing to remember is how these two can act on adenosine receptors if they are consumed together.

The problem is that research on the subject is very limited although ProjectCBD has a few comments regarding the subject, saying, "When mixed with caffeine, CBD’s effects on adenosine would probably be dwarfed by caffeine’s antagonistic activity at adenosine receptors. The extent to which this might diminish CBD’s medicinal properties is unknown. Given cannabidiol’s many modes of action, it is unlikely that this would be seriously problematic."

Combining CBD oil and coffee can be beneficial

The overlapping actions of caffeine and CBD oil are not likely to give much reason to take CBD oil and coffee together. On paper, however, it seems the independent actions of these two substances offer complimentary benefits.

CBD’s relaxing and calming effect can ‘smoothen’ or ‘balance out’ boost of energy that accompanies drinking coffee. Because both substances are antioxidants, they can both work together to rid the body of toxins. Sleep disruption by caffeine could be curbed by CBD, which is known to have positive influences on the quality of sleep.

In the end, it all comes to anecdotal experiences. Search hard enough, and you are likely to find plenty that supports one theory or the other. Whiles some are reeling from the benefits, some claim to experience nothing at all. Considering there isn’t any proof that combining drops of CBD oil to your next cup of coffee is harmful, combining the two is really up to you.

Making your CBD-infused coffee

There are pre-packaged CBD-infused coffee products available, it is undoubtedly possible to do the combination yourself. This gives you the opportunity and advantage to add an accurately calculated dose of CBD oil to your favorite coffee drink at a very low cost. It’s effortless to do – all you need to do is to add your desired dose to your cup, and you’re good to go.
